A war of words has broken out in Europe over Italy’s decision to refuse entry to a ship carrying more than 600 migrants including hundreds of children rescued at sea.

Hungary has supported the move but France has accused Italy’s new populist government of irresponsibility, leading Italy to summon the French Ambassador to Rome.

Spain has now offered to accept the migrants after Malta also refused to take them in.

The hundreds of migrants on board the rescue ship Aquarius are now expected to arrive in the Spanish port city of Valenci on Saturday.
